AWS To Invest $15bn In Cloud Computing In Japan

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is reportedly planning to invest USD 15.24 billion in Japan. The company is looking forward to expand its cloud computing infrastructure in the country, according to a media report on Friday.

This investment is focused on expanding facilities in the metropolises of Tokyo and Osaka to meet the growing customer demand, the report mentioned.

AWS said that its has spent around 1.51 trillion yen from 2011 to 2022 to build up cloud capacity in Japan. The company is currently offering generative AI (Gen AI) services to Japanese corporate customers, including Asahi Group, Marubeni and Nomura Holdings.

Notably, this investment came amidst Japanese government and corporate sector’s competition to catch up in AI development.

Japan’s AI ambitions were also recently highlighted by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida who met heads of ChatGPT creator OpenAI and advanced chipmaker Nvidia in the past year to discuss AI regulation and infrastructure.
