Reliance Industries to Build World’s Largest AI Data Center in India

Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, is set to revolutionize the AI landscape by constructing what is anticipated to be the world’s largest AI data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This ambitious project, with a projected capacity of 3 gigawatts, aims to capitalize on the surging demand for AI applications and services.

This new AI data center signifies one of the most significant investments in India’s tech infrastructure to date, with an estimated cost between $20 billion and $30 billion. It is expected to dwarf the current largest data center owned by Microsoft in Virginia, with a capacity of 600 megawatts. Reliance’s facility will effectively triple India’s current data center capacity, positioning India as a formidable player in the global AI market.

Central to this groundbreaking initiative is Reliance’s partnership with NVIDIA, one of the leading providers of AI chips. Reliance will leverage NVIDIA’s advanced AI semiconductors, including the powerful Blackwell AI processors, to ensure the data center can meet the high demands of AI processing. This collaboration follows the announcement made during the NVIDIA AI Summit in October 2024, where both companies revealed their shared vision for developing AI infrastructure in India.

A standout feature of this massive data center is its commitment to sustainability. Reliance aims to power the facility primarily with renewable energy sources from an adjacent green energy complex that will produce solar, wind, and hydrogen power. This eco-friendly approach aligns with Mukesh Ambani’s broader goal of promoting clean energy and reducing carbon footprints. However, ensuring a consistent power supply for such a significant facility may still require supplementary resources like battery systems and fossil fuels.

The construction of the AI data center is anticipated to provide India with a significant competitive edge in the rapidly expanding AI sector. The project underscores India’s dedication to becoming a global leader in AI-driven technologies, complementing the government’s initiatives to fund startups, AI projects, and large language model development. Experts predict a substantial boost to India’s AI infrastructure, accelerating technological advancements and positioning the country at the forefront of AI innovation.

Mukesh Ambani’s vision for the AI data center is not just about scaling up infrastructure but also making AI applications more affordable and accessible. By offering cost-effective AI solutions, Reliance aims to reduce the high costs of AI inferencing for businesses, much like Ambani’s disruptive approach in the telecom sector.

The Jamnagar facility, with its immense capacity and sustainable design, represents a monumental step forward for India’s AI aspirations. As global demand for AI services continues to surge, this project positions Reliance and India at the forefront of the AI revolution.
